Ovid

c. 43–17 BC · Ancient Rome

Portrait of Ovid

Roman poet of the Augustan age, born at Sulmo in 43 BC. A master of elegy and myth, he was at the height of his fame when Augustus banished him to Tomis on the Black Sea, where he died around AD 17. His Metamorphoses — fifteen books carrying myth from the creation of the world to his own day — became the single richest storehouse of classical mythology for all later art and literature.
