Roman biographer and scholar, secretary to the emperor Hadrian with the imperial archives at his disposal — until a court scandal cost him the post. His Lives of the Twelve Caesars, from Julius to Domitian, mixes constitutional history with private detail no other ancient historian dared print: dinners, dress, jokes, vices, and last words. It fixed the popular image of the emperors for all time.
